September in Maggie-A Month of Fun

September can get lost between summertime and leaf season, but the fun never slows down in Maggie Valley. If you’re hoping for a relaxing getaway during a mild weather month, come visit during September. There is a variety of entertainment for family members of all ages, and during your stay, be sure to visit our many shops and restaurants. No matter your taste or style, we’ve got what you’re looking for!

The following four events take place at the Maggie Valley Fairgrounds.

Thunder in the Smokies-September 6-8

If you’re a fan of all things motorcycles, this is the event for you. As the oldest and largest rally in the Great Smoky Mountains, it’s popular for riders from throughout the United States and Canada. The event takes place three times a year, in September, May and June. Along with riding the picturesque mountain byways and highways, you can enjoy bike games, live music, food vendors and more. Maggie Valley is known as a biker-friendly town. Our lodges, inns, shops and restaurants welcome bikers year-round.

Smoky Mountain Elk Fest-September 13-15

With this being the inaugural year, there’s a buzz in the air surrounding this highly anticipated event. Elk were once abundant throughout Western North Carolina, but by the mid-1800s, they were wiped out from overhunting and habitat loss. In response, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Service and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation re-introduced wild elk into the Cataloochee Valley in 2001.  Since then, the elk have grown in number and continue to thrive. The Smoky Mountain Elk Fest will be two days of fun to celebrate these majestic creatures.

VWs in the Valley-September 20 & 21

Little else shouts Americana like a Volkswagen. This two-day VW car show and swap meet is hosted by the VW Aircooled Association. Activities include a live DJ on site, car shows, hourly door prize drawings, a community campfire, food vendors and a lot more. Tent camping is not allowed, but VW bus camping is welcomed. Pets are also invited as long as they are on a leash and they don’t leave a mess. This is a family-friendly event with kids 15 and under admitted free.

Maggie Valley Swap Meet-Sept. 26-28

This classic car show event is always a favorite with locals and visitors. Cars span the gamut including street rods, classics, rat rods, muscle cars, customs, pick-ups and antiques. There is 24-hour security on site for those of you worried about the safety of your show vehicle. Whether you’re a car owner or a fan, this is a fun event for enthusiasts of all ages.

Also happening in September is the inaugural Kickin’ in the Sticks Country Music Festival held at Elevated Mountain Distilling Company on Saturday, September 28, from noon to 11:30 p.m. This should be an exciting and thumping musical showdown featuring headliner band Love & Theft. Other acts include Ryan Perry, Diamonds & Whiskey, Mile High band, Caleb Gilbert and more.

September is a happening month in Maggie Valley. Take some time out of the hustle and bustle of life to spend some time in one of the most scenic and friendly towns in the country.
